Description

The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture within the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking a Distance Education Lecturer. The lecturer will contribute to the teaching and learning land-grant mission of IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. This is a non-tenure leading, calendar year appointment for one year. Renewal of position is contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

The lecturer will be responsible for teaching courses and leading projects which impact the online program in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture. The lecturer will make ongoing contributions to the academic mission of the department in the areas of curriculum development, academic service, and scholarship in accordance with the department’s strategic goals. The main duties and responsibilities of this position are to:
  • Provide a high-quality learning experience to students by identifying or developing learning materials and teaching courses as allocated by the unit.
  • Provide individual or group consultations for the unit related to online course delivery, technologies and overall support of online learning.
  • Facilitate expansion and development of non-academic, online resources (e.g. the Plant and Soil Sciences eLibrary website, digital badges).
  • Select and develop appropriate assessments and surveys to evaluate academic students’ progress; and to evaluate online material effectiveness.
  • Partner with colleagues across the unit to drive the development, planning, and implementation of high quality, innovative online materials and courses.
  • Participate in departmental and faculty meetings, seminars, and committees to build interdisciplinary collaboration within the unit.
  • Engage with broader scholarly and professional communities.
 
The incumbent will be expected to average 1.0 FTE as determined by the CASNR Academic Appointment Guidelines. The incumbent will teach undergraduate courses to support online education. Specific course assignments may change over time based on the unit’s need and the lecturer’s expertise.

As appropriate to the appointment, the incumbent will also: 
  • Develop a high-impact teaching program in the area of plant or related sciences.
  • Seek and establish effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations, including effective integration with educational programming. 
  • Connect with stakeholders, agency, or industry partners to strengthen educational programming.
  • Collaborate with others to obtain and leverage external and internal support (grants, fee revenue, etc.) as needed for teaching and scholarly activities. 
  • Share scholarly work through relevant publication and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities. 
 
The incumbent will translate research-based information into learner-centered products by creating scholarly, innovative, and high impact learning programs and tools; identifying issues and opportunities focused on learner needs and emerging regional and national issues with international relevance; measuring the impact of programs and communicating results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media; and support student recruitment efforts through online programming efforts.

In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, or university level.

Requirements

A master’s degree in plant sciences, agronomy, horticulture or related sciences plus experience in course design, development, and management are required.
Preferred qualifications include: 
  • A PhD in plant sciences, agronomy, horticulture or related sciences.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • Demonstrated teaching experiences in online environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with emphasis on communication with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to engage in teamwork to address online program development in emerging areas.
  • Evidence of work with diverse or underrepresented communities or groups. 
  • Experience in mentoring students.
