The college is located in Rome, Georgia, 75 miles northwest of Atlanta and 75 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. As a comprehensive liberal-arts college with a distinctive mission and purpose, Berry unites a challenging academic program with practical work experience in a context that nurtures spiritual and moral growth, including significant service to others.

We seek faculty who are committed to excellence as teachers-scholars-mentors and staff who are also committed to serving as mentors and supervisors for students who work on campus. Although not required, more than 90 percent of our students participate in our premier student work program. Employee benefits are competitive.

Job Description:

Berry College invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Oak Hill and the Martha Berry Museum.  Berry seeks a creative leader who will partner with the curator to extend the museum's outreach to new audiences and communities.  The director will build on Berry's distinctive story, an historic home, and a campus committed to stewardship of its history and its historic structures. The museum currently provides a compelling interpretation of Martha Berry's story that appeals to established audiences including alumni, senior scholars, local schools and history enthusiasts.  It also has strong back-of-house operations (curatorial, collections, property management, and registrar).

The director will lead front-of-house management and operations of Oak Hill, the Martha Berry Museum, and four other historic Berry properties.  The director is the public face of Oak Hill and the museum and is responsible for generating increased interest and visits from younger audiences (including families, children, and young adults), including those with no previous connection to Berry.  The director will work with the curator to place the Berry story in a wider context and connect it with current campus initiatives.  The director will collaborate in developing strategic initiatives in areas of community outreach, educational programming, exhibits, public history and tourism.

The director is responsible for budgetary and administrative oversight of the museum and supervision of student interns and student work teams.  The director is also responsible for the college's Senior Scholars program.  The director will develop strong collaborative relationships with both the curator and the director of special events, who manages weddings and other events at the Christopher-Browning Pavilion at Oak Hill.  We seek a director who can also build creative partnerships with Berry faculty and students.

Candidates should possess excellent communication skills, strong leadership and mentoring abilities, and the ability to create a culture that is engaging and caring.  We are especially interested in candidates who can communicate the relevance of Berry's enduring story to diverse audiences and communities, and those who can encourage, mentor and teach the next generation of museum/heritage students.

This position includes competitive benefits and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred in a relevant discipline.
  • Two-five years of progressive experience in museum operations, public history, marketing, or community relations.
  • We are willing to consider those with different levels of professional experience and adjust the initial responsibilities accordingly.
